The Republic of Cameroon development objectives for this sector are:
Goals:
- In the energy sector, the policy goals of the Government are to ensure energy independence through increased production and delivery of electricity, of oil and gas (petroleum resources) and ensure their contribution to economic development.
- For water sector: the pursued goal is universal coverage in drinking water and sanitations services
Additional Infrastructure Investments: Infrastructure investments in energy and water resources to support the Vision 2035 goals:
- Access to drinking water and sanitation: The rate of access to drinking water will have to be increased from 50 to 75%.
- This requires significant investment to eliminate the existing shortcomings in quality and to expand storage and processing capacities.
- Priority will be given to the establishment of drinking water supply networks in urban and semi-urban areas; to a lesser degree, the construction of wells and boreholes in rural and remote areas.
2. Concerning energy; raising energy consumption per unit of GDP from the present 27.7% to 45% by the end of the vision period.
- The intermediate targets are: 33.5% in 2015; 40% in 2025 and 45% in 2035. Hydroelectric power and gas will be the main sources of electric energy generation.
- Refined petroleum products will be increased to cover transportation needs and ensure transition from biomass consumption especially in homes
- Accelerated use of renewable (solar, wind, biomass) are also planned to meet the supply objectives, achieve off-grid supply goals,
- Strengthening of transmission and distribution networks for power, oil and gas sectors.
Cameroon is endowed with abundant primary energy resources which include:
- Hydro electric power: estimated potential is 55.2 giga watts (GW); Cameroon is second only to the Democratic Republic of Congo for HEP output potential in Africa. Of this potential only 3% has been harnessed
- Natural Gas: proven reserves estimated at 110 billion cubic metres or close to 6 Tcf, the harnessed potential is presently nil.
- Biomass Residues: arising from agriculture, forest, untapped potential can be used for generation of heat and power.
- Renewable energy such as solar energy: average annual irradiation of 4 kWh/m2 /day, however potential is not being exploited, same follows with wind energy where suitable sites have been identified not being used. A renewable energy policy is being prepared with policy goals to increase the share of renewable to power and heat generations and to involve private capital in delivery of energy.
Topics in the conference will include:
- Updates on Cameroon Power sector Generation, Transmission and Distribution: Tariffs high Enough to Attract Investment, low Enough to Attract Consumers
- Update on Mega power projects planned and ongoing/ The energy Mix of Cameroon 2035
- Innovative Partnerships in Water Sector
- Upstream Oil & gas Cameroon: Attracting Investments to Capital Intensive Exploration & Production Projects
- Transnational projects; assessing Stakeholder’s Interests
- Financing Cameroon Energy & Water Infrastructure: What Financial instruments are in place to facilitate growth
